Obituary for Charles Kelly Jr.

Charles Kelly Jr., age 82, a resident of Corryton, TN, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Charles was born in Harlan, KY, but spent most of his 82 years in Corryton, TN. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, bird watching, and had a special passion for Kentucky basketball.

Charles was married to the love of his life, Judy Kelly, for 54 wonderful years. When he looked at her, you could tell she was the only one he had ever loved and would ever love. We know he is reunited with her now.

He second loves were his children and grandchildren. His sons, Loyd and Ken, were so very special to him. He doted on them and could not speak highly enough of them both. He was especially proud of Loyd and all he accomplished in his life and the life he built with his wife Angela. Again, we know he is reunited with his son, Kenny now.

His grandchildren were the apples of his eye. He taught Tyler all about cars and couldn't be prouder to become a papaw. The pride grew with each grandchild.

He worked with CSX railroad for 34 years as a Carman with his best friend TJ McMillian. He was known at the railroad as a jokester and very kind soul. He loved going to the Clinton Highway Cruisers Car Club with TJ too.

He was especially close with his brother Bob Kelly, and he and his family spent "vacations" in Indiana with Bob and wife Shannon and children Lyle, Joe, and Mike. Charles could be found many times playing a game of basketball with all the "youngsters." If truth be told, he probably beat them most of the time.

Charles will be missed so very much. But our loss is heaven's gain.

Charles is preceded in death by parents James and Lillian (Blondie) Kelly-Day and Charles Kelly; son Kenny Kelly; grandson Tyler Kelly; brothers Jerry Kelly, Bob Kelly, and Donald Day.

He is survived by his son Loyd Kelly and wife Angela of Oliver Springs; Holly Riffey Smith (to whom was like a daughter); brothers Roger Day and Darrell Day; sisters Bertalou Absher, Linda Fields, and Brenda Brown; grandchildren Aimee Kelly, Abby Kelly, and Ava Kelly; “adopted grandchildren” Mason Woodard, Matthew Woodard, Kelsey Smith, and Bryson Smith; “adopted great grandchild” Paisleigh Woodard; Sherry and Terry Woodard (who were like family); best friend TJ  McMillian and wife Faye; also by a host of nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 1pm at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville with Bro. Matt Reed officiating.

Premier Sharp Funeral Home is honored to serve the Kelly family. A message of condolence may be left for the family at www.sharpfh.com
