Obituary for Beverly McKenna

Beverly Marie (Borka) McKenna, age 90, formerly of Flint Michigan and most recently of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2024.

Beverly was born in Flint, Michigan on September 3, 1933, the daughter of Velma (Okvath) and James F. Borka.  She graduated from Flint Central High School in 1951.  She continued her higher education at Michigan State Normal College receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1955. She taught school in Flint, MI before marrying Dr. John Michael McKenna, her husband of 63 years, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Flint, MI on June 23, 1956.  They made their first home in Honolulu, HI before deciding to settle back in Flint, Michigan to raise their family.

Beverly was a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.), The Needlework Guild of America, and The Flint Dental Auxiliary, and Book Club.  She loved to read, reading over 200 books during the Covid lockdown.

She is survived by her four children: Patricia Werschky of Atlanta, GA, Kathryn (Martin) Lefty of Glen Ellyn, IL, Michael (Laura) McKenna of Oak Ridge, TN, Matthew (Laura) McKenna of Alpharetta, GA; seven grandchildren, Logan Werschky of Maui, HI, David Lefty (Amy Ruan) of NYC, NY, Lauren Lefty (Luri Bauler Pereira) of Flagstaff, AZ, Charlie Daniel of Boston, MA, Seamus and Ian McKenna of Oak Ridge, TN, and Grace McKenna of Alpharetta, GA.

Beverly was preceded in death by her husband J.M. McKenna, mother Velma Borka, aunt Mary Gunder, father James F. Borka, grandmother Mary Okvath.

A mass for the family will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oakridge, TN on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 1:00PM.  Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Columbarium.
